Searching for your ideal job – be prepared
Know what you’re looking for
Before you start your search for the perfect job, there are a few questions you need to know the answers to. Because it is only by knowing yourself that you will know what you should be looking for. This information will help you start the search for your dream job with enthusiasm and self-confidence.
- What would I like to do? What do I enjoy doing?
If you enjoy doing something, you do it better and take pleasure in doing it.
- What do I expect from the ideal job?
How do you see your ideal job? And more importantly, are your expectations realistic?
- How flexible am I willing to be?
Having a job that is far away from home does not suit everyone, nor do abnormal working hours. So think about how flexible you are prepared to be.
- What is important to me?
Which aspects play an important role in your search for a job? Is it salary or atmosphere? Such considerations depend very much on your expectations, but are just that bit more concrete, more realistic.
- What do I have to offer?
What skills do I possess? Where might my diploma lead me? Who am I?
- What are my strengths? What could I improve on?
What are your not-so-strong points and how will you improve on them? What are your strengths? Don’t overestimate, but don’t underestimate yourself either. Your future is at stake.
- Which sector do I want to work in? Do my values correspond with those of the company?
There are plenty of jobs out there, but are all sectors right for you? Do you want to work in a 100% male environment, or how about a female one? What activity should a company refrain from, in your view, or what activity will you not support?
One more handy tip: don’t only look at the website of the company you are applying to, google it too. You will find a wealth of information, which will help you answer the questions above.
